A wireless home security system does not use hard wires to connect the entire system together. Rather than hard wires, the system will transmit radio waves in order for the devices to communicate with each other. This is good because some intruders will bypass a home security system by cutting the wires in certain places, a wireless home security system avoids this problem.

There are basically two types of wireless intruder alarms available. One type will be triggered and sound an alarm as soon as a burglar breaks into the home.

The other type will be a monitored wireless alarm where the burglar’s entry is transmitted to a security company who will check that the alarm is genuine before informing the police of the break in. The control panel of the wireless security system will receive every wireless transmission from the cameras, switches, and movement sensors located around the house.

This main control panel will either trigger the alarm or alert the central monitoring system if there is strange movement or forced entry. A magnetic contact point can be placed around the windows and doors and will sound the alarm if the magnet and the switch are too far apart from each other.

For example if a window is opened wide enough for a person to fit through then the alarm will sound. Large open areas can be covered by body sensors which will sense body movement or heat signals. If such a movement is found then this will be sent to the central control panel which will assess the threat accordingly. If the threat is deemed to be serious, then the security control centre will be alerted as to the situation.

The system can be operated, armed and disarmed through a main keypad placed in an easily accessible place, or by a remote keypad which are very similar to car remote locking systems.

Overall a wireless home security system has several advantages such as the convenience of installing the system around the home.

But you can hire a professional security consultant to come into your home and advise you on this area, they may be able to show you how to install both systems.

You can choose to have your home monitored security system connected to a professional company who will keep track of the system. These companies do however charge a monthly fee but the entire monitoring process is carried out by a team of professionals who are experts in home security.

The system that you have installed in your home will be connected to the central control system of the security company where the staff will be based. This will usually be done by a protected telephone line. All signals from the control panel will be monitored by the staff at the control centre to see if anything is wrong.

If a part of the security system such as a motion sensor or magnetic switch is triggered, then a signal will be sent back to the security centre who will then alert the police. This means that the police may already be on their way to you before you even realise there is a problem. In addition to contacting the police, the system can also send an alert to your mobile phone which is very helpful if you are working away from home or are away on holiday.

As a backup though a password can be put in place so that needless police call outs are avoided. The central security company will attempt to contact the home owner and if they supply the correct password, the call to the police will not be made.

There of course will be occasions when you trigger the alarm by accident, in these cases you will have between thirty and forty five seconds to enter you security code into the keypad to avoid a call being made to the police.

The home security system is connected to the systems of the security company by a phone line, of course it is possible for this phone line to be tampered with. Therefore the security company will try to contact you if for any reason the signal between your home and their computers is lost.

For this reason you must supply the security company with a mobile or cell number so that they can contact you if the regular phone line is down. They will confirm with you that the phone line is down before alerting the police.

On this page of our website is information on Home Security Camera System.

If you are considering installing a new home security camera system, you should make a review of all the systems available to you as well as looking around your home to identify possible weaknesses that need to be solved.

The main elements you need to consider are your needs, budget and the repuation of the security companies you are looking to use. In terms of security needs, only you can really work out what they are. You know your home better than anyone else so you are the best person to work out where any possible problems and weaknesses lie.

But you need not do this all on your own, consider going through your home with a security expert who can potentially spot things that you may not of considered previously.

The advantage of hiring a security expert to carry out this check is that they bring with them a wealth of experience and technical knowledge. As stated above they may see weak spots which you may not of thought about such as a window facing the countryside or low hanging branches next to a balcony. The home security expert will then be able to come up with solutions to these weak spots that should solve the problems. They will be able to inform you of exactly how many motion sensors, cameras and magnetic switches you may need as well as where is the best place to fit them.

The next big decision you need to make is whether to install a central monitoring system or just a simple home security camera system. A central monitoring system will operate 24/7 and record all movements on all cameras connected to it. This may be worthwhile if you live in the country where you are isolated and perhaps more vulnerable to intruders.

Also it is possible for your system to be connected to a central control room at a security company who can alert the police of any of the alarms are triggered.

But make sure that you use a reputable company for this who have backup systems available in case of power cuts etc.

Home security system keeps burglars away

A home security system can protect your life and property, and give you peace of mind. National statistics show that a home without a security system is three times as likely to be broken in as compared to one which is equipped with a security system.

A simple home security system consists of a control panel, a couple of magnetic switches, a motion sensor or two, and an alarm device. This can be hard wired or wireless.

A more advanced security alarm system will have video cameras and will be connected to a central monitoring unit. This will provide you and your family extra security, because there will be trained people who will be keeping tabs on your security needs.

The biggest advantage of a home security system is that it scares away potential intruders. This may happen when an intruder sees a yard sign or a decal sign that says that this house is protected by a professional security service or it may happen when an alarm actually goes off. Either way, the safety of the house goes up.

The following are the key elements of a home security system:

Control panel: It is usually installed in the basement or in a closet and works as the brains of a security system. It is connected to sensors and magnetic switches installed all over the house.

Keypad: It is installed near the main door of the house, and is used to arm or disarm the system. A good keypad is easy to read, displays the system’s status and can arm or disarm the system with a single touch.

Magnetic contacts: These are installed on the doors and windows. If the door or window is opened, the contact is broken and an alarm is triggered.

Sensors: Body heat or motion can be detected by passive infrared motion detectors. These sensors should be activated when there is no family member in the house, who may trigger the alarm.

Alarm sounder: This can be a loud siren with or without flashing lights.

Another do-it-yourself option is wireless alarm system. It uses radio waves and requires no great skills to install. Supervised alarm systems are those wireless systems, which can monitor their sensors to ensure that they are communicating properly with the control panel. Some of these supervised systems are inexpensive and can be connected to full-time monitoring stations installed in a security company.

Another do-it-yourself option is the self-contained burglar alarm system. It can be plugged into any outlet and can be removed as and when needed. These systems can be bought for $150 or even less.

The following points must be kept in mind while installing the DIY burglar alarm system:

- The signal strength and background noise levels in the proposed location should be checked before the devices are mounted;

- The transmitting and receiving devices should not be mounted under metal lintels placed on top of windows, doors etc. because they affect transmission of signals;

- Any wiring into the transmitters and receivers should be kept away from the aerials.

- Receivers or receiver aerials should not be mounted near to electrical distribution equipment, televisions, computer equipments or large metals.

- Make sure that the remote aerial is mounted in the correct orientation. Never clip any other cable close to the aerial or the aerial cable. Also, try not to run your aerial cable next to mains cables.

- In case of very thick walls where the signal strength is weak, the receiver or its aerial should be mounted high up in the loft.

- Survey the premises carefully before installing the detection devices.

Brink’s Home Security System is very reliable

A Brink’s home security system can protect your home 24 hours a day and give you peace of mind. All that you need to do is to select a system that suits your budget.

A $ 99 standard system from Brink’s can alert you each time a protected door or window is opened. It has a zone bypass feature and one-touch police and fire emergency buttons.

The standard keypad has three emergency buttons. You can use them to inform Brink’s that you need police, fire or medical aid. The keypad is simple to use and it allows the system to be turned off by entering a numeric code. The system includes two perimeter sensors. If a secured door or window is opened while the system is armed, the alarm will be triggered.

The master control panel transmits the monitoring data to Brink’s central monitoring center. It is equipped with an enclosed back-up battery so that it can keep working in the event of a power failure.

A motion detector is provided to monitor open areas. If there is any movement within your home, the alarm is triggered. A loud 90-decibel siren, which is a part of the system, goes off when the alarm is triggered.

Brink’s yard sign and window decals inform potential intruders that your home is protected by Brink’s security system. This is meant to act as a deterrent.

You can get the premium system from Brink’s for $ 205. For just $ 106 more, you will get all the features of a Standard System, as well as a premium keypad and an additional perimeter sensor. The premium keypad has a backlit display and it guides you through the system’s functions.

All these systems are hi-tech and highly dependable, and are today being used by almost a million Americans and Canadians.

The company itself is an affiliate of Brink’s Incorporated, one of the world’s largest secure transportation service provider. The company that was formed in 1983 has its headquarters in Irving, Texas. The Brink’s National Service Center, which provides alarm monitoring and other customer services, is also located there.

Elements of a video surveillance system

The video surveillance system is used both at home and in commercial establishments to monitor movement of people. Also known as closed circuit TV (CCTV) it is used to monitor pathways and insecure areas around homes to prevent break ins and intrusions.

A video surveillance system is made up of the following:

Monitors: They are used to display video information processed by strategically placed cameras in and around the house. These monitors have better video resolution than the standard television receivers The resolution of a black-and-white CCTV monitor ranges from 700-1000 lines whereas the colored monitors have a resolution of 350-400 lines.

Cameras: They are placed at strategic locations to monitor the movement of unknown or suspicious persons. They beam this information to the monitors.

Coaxial cabling: It is used to transport video information from the cameras to the monitors.

Switchers: They are used to hook two or more cameras to a monitor. Advanced switchers provide facility to hook alarm inputs so that the corresponding camera is targeted and locked when the alarm is activated.

The camera is the most important component in any video surveillance system, and great care should be taken while buying it. Some of the points that should be kept in mind while buying cameras are:

a) How many cameras are needed to effectively monitor the exteriors and interiors of a home?

b) Is there a need for both audio and visual inputs?

c) ??Should the cameras take color or black-and-white images?

d) ??Should the cameras be wired or should they be wireless?

The placement and installation of cameras is equally important. The following points should be kept in mind before installing the camera:

a) The farther the camera is placed, the larger will be the area of view. However, the clarity will be proportionately lesser.

b) There should be no blind spots caused by trees, boundaries, poles etc.

c) The height of the camera should be such that it is not easily accessible from the ground.

A user has several options while selecting a home video surveillance system. He can have the securities camera connected to a PC or to a TV and a VCR. The camera can be wireless or wired. The user also has the option to use hidden or spy cameras.

The user can either install the video surveillance system himself or else hire a video surveillance and monitoring service to carry out the task.

Home security monitoring makes your property safer

A home security monitoring company charges a monthly fee to monitor any breach in security at a customer’s home. The monitoring is done by trained staff which uses sophisticated equipment to keep track of what is happening at a customer’s home.

The staff sits at a central monitoring station which is connected to a customer’s home by a telephone line. The staff monitors all security signals emanating from the control panel installed in a safe place in the customer’s home. When the control panel, which works like the brains of a home security system, receives a signal from a sensor or a magnetic switch of a break in it immediately alerts the central monitoring station. This it does by using an automated dialing system.

The central monitoring station, in turn, instantly calls the customer’s home. The caller first checks for the customer’s password. If the password is wrong or if the call is not answered the caller alerts the area police. The caller then locates the stand by numbers given by the customer and informs him of the alarm. The alarm, however, is switched off if the house owner provides the right password.

A central monitoring station is required to notify the authorities within 45 seconds, if an alarm goes off. This is a tricky job because a false alarm will unnecessarily send the police racing to a customer’s house, and disturb the neighbors. The employee therefore is required to take a measured decision before alerting the police.

Large security monitoring companies have their own central stations, while smaller ones often use the services of third-party home security monitoring companies. These monitoring centers comply with the high standards set by the non-profit, independent Underwriters’ Laboratory. That is why their charges also are higher.

Sometimes the alarm goes off because the house owner trips the security system by mistake. He can, of course, correct the mistake by entering the password and switching off the alarm. However, the time available to do so is only 30 to 45 seconds.

Several security companies insist on a cell phone backup to filter out false alarms. This is because the control panel will alert the central monitoring station if the regular phone line is not working. The security center will first call up the key holder to check. The authorities will only be notified if it is found that someone has tampered with the phone line.
